Secondary

Meteor has an excellent success rate with Seconday School learners. Whether support is needed for day-to-day maths, working towards KS3 SATs or, importantly, GCSEs, Meteor offers personalised and accessible tuition in your own home. Feedback we receive suggests that this success may in part be due to the learning taking place in the learner's own home, where they feel more comfortable and confident.
Our tutors are also GCSE examiners and so are up to date with the relevant subject knowledge and topics which need to be covered so learners are confident when preparing for exams.
With changes to the Secondary Curriculum in 2017, some learners and parents are also concerned about keeping up with the different topics and questions which are now focused on. As education specialists, we can support these changes and make the transition easier.

Some of the Maths changes brought in include:
•    Maths will now include harder subject material and teachers will particularly have more to teach in the classroom for this subject.
•    Children should be able to use probability, reasoning with algebra and geometry.
•    Greater emphasis on solving mathematical problems that require multi-step solutions.
•    New topics to be covered including set theory, functions and iterations.
•    Students will be expected to learn key mathematical formulae by heart.

Some of the English changes include:
•    The English foundation course has been removed, but English will no long exist as a single subject and will instead by split into English Language and English Literature.
•    English Language will no longer assess spoken language, and speaking and listening will no longer count towards the overall grade.
•    Spelling, punctuation and grammar will be given much more weight towards the final grade however, contributing 20% of the overall marks instead of 5%.
•    Students studying English Literature will be required to read a wider range of texts but there will be no set texts. They will be tested on four areas of classic literature, including Shakespeare and Charles Dickens, although Of Mice and Men is not on the new curriculum.

For GCSEs, a change that may require some adapting to, is the change to the grading system from letters (A*-F) to numbers (9-1). 9 will be the highest grade possible and is considered harder to achieve than an A*; only 20% of current A/A* student would be awarded a Grade 9.
